Closing Social

Be sure to come out to the closing social for some free food and activities! Information about next year’s activities, events, and competitions will be available (ever wanted to build a pumpkin throwing catapult?). If you are not involved in ASME, come find out what we are all about and how to get involved.

Call For Pictures and Videos

This is just a public service announcement asking for pictures and/or videos from past ASME events. If you have any that you would like us to publish, please email them to me at clinton.buchanan@gmail.com Thank You!

Angry Birds at Utah State

The activity for the ASME opening social this year was Real-Life Angry Birds.  This consisted of using water balloon launchers and tennis balls to knock over walls of cardboard boxes.  Everyone who attended had a blast!  There was even a quartet of French Horns that volunteered to play the “Angry Birds Theme Song” during the game.  This activity was used to introduce the pumpkin launching activity in the end of October.  On October 29th at 3:00 pm ASME will be launching pumpkins using student designed trebuchets and catapults at Elk Ridge Park.  All are welcome to come and watch.

This year ASME will be having “Popcorn Fridays” where popcorn will be sold on the third floor of the ENGR building.  So make sure you start bringing money on Fridays.  If you are interested in buying an ASME T-shirt, or renting a locker in the newly remodeled ASME room (EL 246), please contact Karen Zobell in the MAE office or ASME at asmeaggie@gmail.com

Student in Industry Day!

Friday, February 4, 2011

34th Annual Student-in-Industry Day

The Utah Section of The American Society of Mechanical Engineers is holding its thirty-fourth Annual “Student-in-Industry Day” on Friday, February 4, 2011.  We are seeking the support of local engineering-oriented industries by their sponsoring one or more mechanical engineering students for the event.

Company sponsors will provide an engineer escort who will show and explain the company’s operations to the student during the afternoon.  That evening the students and company escort are hosted by the sponsoring company at the ASME banquet and student paper contest to be held at the University of Utah’s Crimson View Room in the Olpin Union Building (Directions).  Partners of students and escort are also invited to attend.  The cost per person is $30 for the banquet meal, paid for by the sponsoring company.  The objective is to give students a valuable first-hand view of the working engineer’s role in industry.  This interaction between engineering students and the industries that will someday employ them is a critical, often neglected, part of their education. We believe this type of interaction will also benefit your company by giving you first hand access to these future engineers to discover what their interests and concerns may be.
